After a sale in June, DOB permits were filed in September for an addition to be affixed to 247 Starr Street, already home to the Moroccan-Israeli spot Queen (247 Starr St.) and around the corner from Wyckoff Starr Coffee Shop (30 Wyckoff Ave.).
Multiple sources now say that the owners of the Mexican restaurant Alma Negra (494 4th Ave.), over on the Park Slope-Gowanus border, are opening a coffee shop in the new spot, right off the Jefferson L in Bushwick.
Leticia Barradas, one of the co-owners of Alma Negra, who has lived in Bushwick for more than 30 years, will be running this new cafe, name and opening date to be determined, Barradas says, pending the buildout for which permits were filed. I’m told that it’s going to be a “Mexican style coffee shop.”
Notably, Barradas isn’t the first of Alma Negra’s owners to make moves in Bushwick. Fermín Teco, another of the three owners of the Park Slope spot, already set up Amaranto (887 Hart St.) over a decade ago, near Maria Hernandez Park and notable for its tamales.
Recently, the owners of Greenpoint’s Diamond Lil (179 Nassau Ave.) and Williamsburg’s Kijitora have expanded into Ridgewood. Businesses appear to be increasingly decamping from more developed parts of Brooklyn to open up shop in Bushwick and Ridgewood.
