Out with the groceries, in with coffee and wine. The space previously occupied by boutique Bed-Stuy grocer Mitch’s Provisions (148 Tompkins Ave.) is set to be taken over by Lab 148, per State Liquor Authority filings and an Instagram post last month that promises “Something new is brewing.”
No renovation permits have been filed yet with the City’s Department of Buildings, but alcohol licenses were filed on Oct. 20 by principals Lia Makharadze and Nata Khositashvili.
If news of another wine bar in the area feels like déjà vu, that’s because the owners behind clothing store/coffee shop Sincerely, Tommy (343 Tompkins Ave.) are also opening wine bar Monro (343A Tompkins Ave.) on the other side of Herbert Von King Park.

Mitch’s Provisions closed in April after operating for over a year at 148 Tompkins Ave. It began in 2020 as a popup outside Black-owned Bed-Vyne & Brew (370 Tompkins Ave.). Bed-Vyne suffered a similar fate, also closed in 2025, per BK Mag. The bar Hatch, also Black-owned, now occupies its storefront.
Mitch’s sold seasonal, locally sourced produce and proteins at often less-than-agreeable prices. It presented itself as an alternative to the spread of Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods across Brooklyn.
Lab 148 did not respond to a request to confirm an opening date.
